Being Human-Consciousness
Our body functions by use of electrical activity.
Death is considered to occur when this electrical activity ceases.
It is presumed that its departure, means the end of consciousness.
Consciousness is the ability to experience reality. The brain is the processing center that allows consciousness to experience our physical world. Consciousness is what is aware that we have a physical world.
It is presumed that we have a conscious and subconscious aspect of our mind. Our mind is different than our brain. Our brain is just an organ, used by consciousness.
Our conscious mind is concerned with our external world. We do all our thinking with this part of our mind. If we do something intentionally, its our conscious mind at work. It’s responsible for reason and logic. It uses our 5 senses to interact with the physical world, and gather information .The information our senses gather, is relayed to our brain through waves of electricity. Our conscious mind uses the information the brain processes and makes a decision about what is happening in our external world. Our subconscious takes our conscious minds interpretation of what is happening in the external world, compares it to data it has stored, relating to similar situations, and then instructs the body on how to respond back to our external world. The information our subconscious has stored, is the information your conscious mind has been sending it since birth.
Our subconscious is concerned with our internal world. It controls all the involuntary actions of our bodies. It controls all the things that go on inside our body without us thinking about it, like breathing, heart rate, hormone release, healing and digestion. This is where our memories are stored. This is where the emotions we feel are determined. Our subconscious mind is like a command center. It listens to our conscious mind and responds to the information it is given. It does not question whether the information is correct, it just accepts it and responds. It responds by memory. All the information that has ever been sent from our conscious mind is stored there.
Our conscious mind seems to be endlessly thinking, planning, always wondering, judging, categorizing. The stimuli from our senses keep it endlessly churning. It seems like it never stops..but it can.
Our subconscious, however, works around the clock. It never stops. It has too much to do. It has a heart to beat, oxygen to move, blood to pump. It has to make sure that everything in our body is functioning correctly. If not, it has to activate whichever system needs to be activated to keep balance in our bodies. If we have an infection, it activates our immune system, and healing starts. If there is too much glucose in our blood, it activates our pancreas to release insulin. If there is a perceived threat, it activates our flight or fight response, by releasing hormones Its amazing how much goes on in our body that we pay no attention to. How much we simply take for granted. At the same time that our subconscious mind is handling all the necessary functions of our bodies, it is also dealing with all the endless stuff our conscious mind is throwing at it. If what we send is a jumbled mess of conflicting information, that is what is sent to every cell of our body. We need to learn to quiet our conscious mind, and let our subconscious work in peace.
Our goal is to have our subconscious and conscious minds work together.
“ A house divided can not stand” Mark 3:25
When the two aspects of our mind work together, our reality changes. We experience life as it really is.
If we want our subconscious mind to give our body the correct response to our external world, we need to make sure the information we are sending it is correct.
If our response (emotions) to the events in our lives are irrational, it only means the wrong messages are being sent.
We need to change the message.
How do we do this?
The only aspect of our mind we can directly control is our conscious mind. Our subconscious only does what it is told. If it sends the wrong instructions to our body, it is only because our conscious mind sent the wrong message.
Indirectly we control our subconscious, by controlling our conscious mind. The only way we can control our conscious mind, is by controlling what we think.
We have complete control of our thoughts. We just have to learn how.
